Proactively Reducing Repetitive Behaviors

Repetitive behaviors are one of the core symptoms of autism and proactively reducing them is a primary focus at Communication Lab. When looking to reduce repetitive behaviors it is important to consider that many individuals with autism have shared that the repetitive behaviors they engage in are very calming and therapeutic. However, they can inhibit a person from being fully aware of their environment and potentially impact their safety.

Additionally, when a person is frequently engaging in repetitive behaviors, it can be difficult for them to participate in tasks that are focused on increasing their independence. When looking to reduce repetitive behaviors, Communication Lab provides a variety of proactive strategies that focus on helping those we serve to be comfortable and stay regulated during their ABA sessions, as well as throughout their daily routines. We are extremely detailed when personalizing and creating all of our behavior plans for each patient.

Some proactive strategies that we utilize regularly include:

  • Sensory Activities that help stimulate the brain and can help create neural pathways to improve sensory processing systems. Some examples include deep pressure, playing with play-doh or theraputty, massages, and crawling through tunnels.

  • Movement Activities that help to build core muscles and serve as an outlet to release energy. Some examples include jumping on a trampoline, sliding and swinging at the playground, hiking and running, riding a bike, yoga, and lifting.

  • Meditation- The ability to sit and relax is fundamental to our wellbeing and many individuals with autism have difficulty sitting still because they have a desire to be constantly moving or may be overstimulated easily.

Sensory and movement activities help to engage the vestibular and proprioceptive systems that are vital to understanding and perceiving your environment. We have been fortunate enough to collaborate with some amazing clinicians who have helped us understand strategies to incorporate and utilize. For expert advice from an Occupational Therapist on these topics we highly suggest contacting www.joyride-therapy.com.

By incorporating a variety of proactive strategies we are able to avoid intrusive physical prompting, restraining, or other consequence strategies that could have a negative impact on an individuals well being.
